Homemade Sloppy Joe
Maybe every kid in America loves Sloppy Joes! It's tangy, kind of sweet and super messy, and though it seems like fast food, it actually has plenty of veggies mixed in. There are lots of variations: some people use tomato sauce instead of ketchup, or add sweet pickles, or use other spices, etc. This recipe has a good balance of sweet, tangy and a hint of spiciness. Good with cole slaw or salads.
Background: Classic American home cooking! This is something my family often had for dinner when we wanted something quick on busy school nights. It's probably eaten all over America, but this is like the one we ate in Ohio ;)
Ohio
Serves 4
- Ground beef (around 350 g | 3/4 lb)
- Onions (1/2 medium)
- Green bell pepper (1/2 )
- Celery (1 stalk)
- Garlic (optional) (1 clove)
- Jalapeño or other spicy chili (optional) (1/2, or adjust to taste)
- Ketchup (150 ml | 2/3 US cup)
- Salt & pepper
- Brown sugar (1 Tbsp)
- Dijon or yellow mustard (1 Tbsp)
- Worcestershire sauce (1 tsp)
- Cumin powder (optional) (1/4 tsp)
- Hamburger buns (4)
Preparations
-
Step 1
Prep the ingredients:
Finely chop the onion, bell pepper and celery. Mince hot chili and garlic if using. -
Step 2
In a large frying pan or sauce pan, add beef, vegetables, garlic and chili pepper and saute on medium. You shouldn't need any oil because the fat and liquid from beef will be enough.
-
Step 3
Cook for 10 minutes or so, until the beef has browned completely and the water from the vegetables has evaporated. Drain out any excess oil from the meat.
-
Step 4
Add the rest of the ingredients - ketchup, mustard, salt & pepper, sugar, cumin, and Worcestershire sauce - and mix well.
-
Step 5
Cover and let simmer on low for 10-15 minutes so the flavors soak right into the meat. Stir occasionally.
-
Step 6
It's ready once the sauce has thickened up!
-
Step 7
Toast the buns and pile on the Sloppy Joe mix! Have plenty of napkins available ;)
